Q:There has been a lot of uproar in the media over relegious conversions and re-conversions in India. Does Sree Narayana Guru have an opinion on this controversial topic?
---Parvathi, FLorida, USA

A: Thank you Parvati, for asking this question. I was wondering about it myself. 1998-1999 has seen its fair share of controversy over relegious conversions.
After some searching, I found that Sree Narayana Guru had a discussion about relegions conversion with Mahatma Gandhi at the Sivagiri Mutt on 13, March 1925.
Gandhi wanted to impress upon the Narayana Guru the need to stop the conversion of low caste Hindus to other relegions. He is reported to have said:

The caste Hindus and the low caste Hindus are both the sons of Hinduism. The caste Hindu is the elder brother who shoulders responsibility, and he therefore exercises certain privileges. The low caste Hindu is his younger brother who is to be cared for. If the elder brother turns out to be somewhat rough and aggressive that should not make the younger brother a runaway from his mother--Hinduism

Sree Narayana Guru did not agree with Gandhi's reasoning and said:

If a Hindu has no belief in his religion and has belief in another religion, it is good that he embraces the religion in which he believes. Such a conversion will help Hinduism in getting rid of a non-believer, and the religion to which the man gets converted will have the benefit of adding one more believer to it. Moreover the man will be benefited with love and sympathy which he will get from his fellow-believers. There is nothing wrong in such conversions.

Q:Did Guru encourage religious reconversions?(From other religions to Hinduism)
---Joon, UAE

A:This question is closely related to Guru's views on relegious conversion I was unable to find any references to the Guru encouraging or discouraging relegious conversions. However in Atompadesa Satakam para #46 & 47 the Guru tells us about the futility of relegious conversion.
Atomapadesa Statakam para 46 & 47

  • It is not possible to vanquish any religion by fighting it. By becoming competitive and fighting each other's religion, the adherence of the members of the persecuted religion only becomes increased in its fanatictzeal. By promoting religious feuds one is only destroying his own integrity and succumbs to the evils of hatred. This should never be forgotten.
  • In principle all are insisting on coming to a single faith. Disputants do not realize this. Wise people who are free of sectarian exclusiveness know this secret.
